1 A Post-trainer's Guide to Multilingual Training Data: Uncovering Cross-lingual Transfer Dynamics In order for large language models to be useful across the globe, they are fine-tuned to follow instructions on multilingual data. Despite the ubiquity of such post-training, a clear understanding of the dynamics that enable cross-lingual transfer remains elusive. This study examines cross-lingual transfer (CLT) dynamics in realistic post-training settings. We study two model families of up to 35B parameters in size trained on carefully controlled mixtures of multilingual data on three generative tasks with varying levels of complexity (summarization, instruction following, and mathematical reasoning) in both single-task and multi-task instruction tuning settings. Overall, we find that the dynamics of cross-lingual transfer and multilingual performance cannot be explained by isolated variables, varying depending on the combination of post-training settings. - DOT: A Distillation-Oriented Trainer Knowledge distillation transfers knowledge from a large model to a small one via task and distillation losses. In this paper, we observe a trade-off between task and distillation losses, i.e., introducing distillation loss limits the convergence of task loss. We believe that the trade-off results from the insufficient optimization of distillation loss. The reason is: The teacher has a lower task loss than the student, and a lower distillation loss drives the student more similar to the teacher, then a better-converged task loss could be obtained. To break the trade-off, we propose the Distillation-Oriented Trainer (DOT). DOT separately considers gradients of task and distillation losses, then applies a larger momentum to distillation loss to accelerate its optimization. We empirically prove that DOT breaks the trade-off, i.e., both losses are sufficiently optimized. Extensive experiments validate the superiority of DOT. Notably, DOT achieves a +2.59% accuracy improvement on ImageNet-1k for the ResNet50-MobileNetV1 pair. Conclusively, DOT greatly benefits the student's optimization properties in terms of loss convergence and model generalization. Code will be made publicly available. 4 authors · Jul 17, 2023
- Neuro-Endo-Trainer-Online Assessment System (NET-OAS) for Neuro-Endoscopic Skills Training Neuro-endoscopy is a challenging minimally invasive neurosurgery that requires surgical skills to be acquired using training methods different from the existing apprenticeship model. There are various training systems developed for imparting fundamental technical skills in laparoscopy where as limited systems for neuro-endoscopy. Neuro-Endo-Trainer was a box-trainer developed for endo-nasal transsphenoidal surgical skills training with video based offline evaluation system. The objective of the current study was to develop a modified version (Neuro-Endo-Trainer-Online Assessment System (NET-OAS)) by providing a stand-alone system with online evaluation and real-time feedback.
